“Painting is a source of endless pleasure, but also of great anguish.”- Balthus
“When you are painting a landscape, assume the painting is real and the landscape is an illusion.”- Darby Bannard
"I cannot pretend to be impartial about the colors. I rejoice with the brilliant ones, and am genuinely sorry for the poor browns."- Winston Churchill
“Painting from nature is not copying the object; it is realizing one’s sensations.”- Paul Cezanne
In recent years I have been primarily a landscape painter who dabbled with still life and figurative subject matter. Like many artists do over time, I have become frustrated, wanting to push myself out of the box of traditional artwork. I have been exploring the world of more abstract art and in the process have found it to be far more difficult and more creative than simply “copying” what I see. Instead of painting from the eye, it is painting from the heart. I am just beginning on this new journey and have much to learn. How far I will stray from realism is anyone’s guess at this point. In this process I am also exploring with new media. Instead of my traditional oils and pastels, I am now concentrating on acrylic, ink and photo transfers. Also I have discovered there are many fun ways of applying paint beyond the brush.
